Hi there!

Summer has arrived - the sun is shining as I write - and it’s hard to stay inside.  It’s sooooooo tempting to escape to the garden, but when I do the fir tree that inspired the character of Tree Witch, hisses at me, to get back to my desk and finish Pillywiggins and the Tree Witch.  I obey of course - she’s a nasty witch - and I’ve reached Chapter 18.

Here’s a picture of Pillywiggins.

Three new editions of books previously in hardback:
Kisses Are Yuk
Class Three All At Sea
Big Blue Train  - now a chunky board book, ideal for babies.
One completely new:
Henry VIII Has to choose.

Illustrators are hard at work on three new picture books:

Don’t Tell Aardvark.

I should say that was my working title, but my publishers have decided to call it something completely different. Watch this space for the new title, which for the moment, they want to keep secret.

This will be my first picture book with illustrator Guy Parker Rees, though Guy did illustrate my Whispery Wood series of early readers. I adore his gentle humorous style.

Save the Savannah

The publishers changed this title too.  You may remember me telling you about Helpful Hyena. Well it’s Save the Savannah now.

Hyena and a Vulture work very hard to keep the grassy plains of Africa clean and healthy, but no one appreciates them, till they go on strike …

I think Garry Parsons has made the unappreciated pair look very appealing. Here’s the cover!

Save Our Savannnah Cover

Bears on the Stairs.

Lynne Chapman has started work on our fourth book together, and I’m thrilled that we’re building on our author-illustrator partnership.   Lynne is so quirky and original, I can hardly wait to see her interpretation of this bedtime story. She has started work but I haven’t had so much as a glimpse yet.

Lynne and I are performing partners too, so look out for us at the Edinburgh Festival on 19th August.  We’ll be in the RBS Corner Theatre at 1.30 wearing pirate hats as Class Three All at Sea will be the centre of our act.  Come along and join in the swash buckling fun. Hmm. What is a swash buckle?  I must look it up.

There is a lot of new stuff on my site including more Lesson Plans, so have a wander. Web Master has been busy putting up material.  For younger readers there are puzzles to work out and pictures to colour, all based on my picture books. You can click on from the book in the books section or go straight to Activities.

You can also hear Ben, one of my youngest fans, reading Class Two at the Zoo and saying why it’s his favourite book. (This is a Windows Media File and may take a while to load.) Note, do let me know what your favourites are - you can use the Forum - and send me pictures, or even recordings. I’ll put them up in the gallery.

For older readers there are word searches and cross word puzzles based on my novels, and for a competition with a prize click on this Link.  Have a go!  You may win a family trip to the Tower of London.
